#1  Can Cats & Dogs get Sunburns?

Pale-colored coated cats that live in hot, tropical regions can get a sunburn on their ears. They should be kept indoors during the sunniest part of the day and their ears protected with a sunblock cream. PLEASE NOTE: Check with your vetinarian for an appropriate sunblock for your cat.

Even though a dog's coat provides some protection from the sun, light skinned dogs such as bull terriers, Dalmations and short hair breeds may have vulnerable spots such as the belly, tips of the ears and bridge of the nose which have little or no fur.   To protect your dog: limit outings during the hotest part of the day, protect him with shade, put a t-shirt or hat on your dog, or slather your dog's ears, nose and belly with sunscreen. Use a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or above. AVOID sunscreens with zinc oxide and PABA as both ingredients can be dangerous if your dog decides to lick it off.
